Five neighborhoods create a close-knit feeling of community – with a total of 99 beds. Ninety-one are private rooms, with 8 semi-private “Jack & Jill” rooms. Residents are served by many of the same nurses, staff and state tested nursing assistants on a regular basis. This modest start was the beginning of 127 years of service of the RHSJ’s to the sick of the Miramichi region. From this Chatham Hotel-Dieu community would come the foundresses of two large hospitals in the United States and another smaller one in Alberta. Chima earned his undergraduate degree in nursing from the Mount, began his career at CCHMC as a student co-op, then earned his Master of Science in Nursing from the Mount. In 1942 the Sisters purchased their current property at Chardon Road, and Mount St. Joseph was incorporated. Through hard work and dedicated efforts, the Sisters raised sufficient funds to build the original nursing home by using the existing facilities on the grounds to cater banquets, weddings and dinners. At all times, certified nursing homes must meet more than 180 rules designed to protect residents of nursing homes. These standards address a range of areas, which include proper management of patient medicines, protecting residents from physical or mental abuse or neglect, to the proper preparation and storage of food.
